Seminar Overview
The Field Trip and Seminar course has given me a lot of memorable and unforgettable experiences. The course has also taught me lessons and inspired me to do better in my studies to be successful. The 5 days field trip was really worth it because I learned not only my possible future field of expertise but also I learned some History. We toured different companies that are related to our course and I was not disappointed because I really learned a lot from them.
The company visits were very fruitful to our knowledge at the same time we were having fun and interaction within our friends. During our FTS we also have tourist attraction tours after our company visits, and some wondering around in their recreational buildings such as malls, parks, and outposts and other tourist spots. We also learned a lot of the lifestyle you have to take in Manila, and how fast paced kind of lifestyle is a must to have when you decide to live there. The Field Trip and Seminar was really a success.
Day 1
On our first day of FTS, we landed in NAIA Terminal 3 and we arrived earlier than the schedule and we used the shuttle bus because the tunnel is being repaired. After we got our baggage, we had a headcount and we are ready to go. We waited outside the terminal for the buses and we had to wait for the buses because we arrived earlier than expected. We headed to McDonalds for our breakfast.
Today, I went on a seminar to the Department of Science and Technology Main Office at Bicutan, Taguig and the Social Security System Main Office at East Avenue, Quezon City
What I learned?
I have learned more about Project NOAH (Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards). It is a project made by the partnership of UP and DOST, they made this project because of the recent calamity that hits in our country like flood. It’s a map of the country that views every place with their specific weather.
The best feature of this project was it can search specific place in the country and calculates what will be the weather of the day. They also showed us their prototypes and devices used to calculate . Other than flood, it can also show the path being taken by the typhoon and the rainfall level. He even showed us some simulation made by Project NOAH when some typhoons hit the places in Mindanao. He said that the idea of project NOAH will be very helpful in times of disaster preparedness.
What I liked?
I liked the seminar at the Department of Science and Technology because I learned a lot from them and I also liked their offices because they are surrounded by nature and there are so many trees. I also liked the food in our lunch and I didn’t get the root beer drink which is disgusting. I also liked the SSS seminar because their building is tall and there are lots of paintings which are very expensive.
After the educational tour of the day, we went shopping at TriNoma and I like it because we had the chance rest from a long day tour. After that we had our first buffet dinner and I like the food very much because it’s unlimited.
What I didn’t like?
I didn’t like that we had to transfer bus because our bus got flat .I didn’t liked the inside of TriNoma mall because it smells bad and too polluted. I also didn’t liked that they just told us the importance of having SSS as an employee. Though the speaker from I guess the IT department, shared the history of the database of SSS has grown into up until now.
DAY 2
Today, I went on a seminar to the PLDT Innolab at Mandaluyong City and IBM Philippines, Ayala Techno-Hub, Quezon City.
What I learned?
What I learned about the PLDT Innolab visit was the history of PLDT and how they managed to make their company strong throughout the years. I also learned that PLDT played an important role in communication especially in the war. The tour guide was very cheerful and explains very well. She shared a lot about the PLDT history from its pioneering years up until now. They showed some of their offices. There was an office which is so home-like because of its interior design. She also showed us the board room where we can see the control room of PLDT. The speaker from their department told us that the reason why is that so and it was because they uses FIBR as its cable.
I also learned many things in the IBM Philippines tour, such as the Internet of Things and their cloud technology Bluemix. I learned that cloud technology is very awesome and useful. However, the Bluemix is very expensive. The speaker had a demonstration on how the internet of things works and he used his mobile phone to manipulate those LED lights.
What I liked?
I really liked everything this day because I learned a lot of new things and the destinations of our tour are really related to our course. In the PLDT Innolab, we also had a glimpse of the control room where the exchanges of data from different networks from different places around the country are monitored. We also visited the exhibit room where the partner companies of PLDT and a lot more had their units inside as display. I also liked the time when we called the PLDT Innolab in Davao to try their video conference.
On our IBM tour, I liked their building because it’s very clean and simple. I also liked the discussion because the topic is easy to understand and interesting.
What I didn’t like?
I didn’t like that we had to eat our lunch in the bus while travelling and it is the most annoying thing. I also didn’t like that we didn’t received souvenir lanyards because the stock hasn’t arrived yet.
DAY 3
Today, I went on a seminar at the SMX Convention Center for the 13th Youth 4 IT Conference.
What I learned?
I learned many things from different speakers. I also learned that different expertise in the IT world that shared their experiences in the business. Oracle shared their version of internet of things just like what IBM have. A game designer also shared his experience on how he is doing well on his profession
What I liked?
What I like about this day is that when visited each booth in the exhibit. I got too many freebies for every booth. We had to gather signatures from every booth so that we can have their freebies and will be able to finish the activity on that notebook we had. I liked that I got freebies like key chains and stickers.
I also liked the lunch because it’s just near the venue and the food was great. I also liked that we had a chance to tour SM MOA with my friends and we got confused in where to go so we watched the ice skating.
After the SM MOA, I liked that we had to stop by in the Luneta Park to take some pictures and I also like that our tour guide taught us some history while we are on our way to tutuban. I like the products in tutuban because they are very affordable and there are many variety of products.
What I didn’t like?
I didn’t like that the bus didn’t come back on schedule and we waited for so long to get our bags and we can’t continue in the booths because our notebooks are in our bags. And we were told that the bus got stuck on the heavy traffic. So, we have no other choice and we decided to go on and buy some shirts.
DAY 4
Today, I went on a seminar to the MMDA (Metro Manila Development Authority) Center at EDSA Makati.
What I learned?
I learned in the seminar at the MMDA where they handle the traffic situation around Manila. The speakers were able to introduce to us the basic functions of the traffic lights colors and how they are monitored for each transition. They also showed us real time road situation around the metro. With the modern technology, their video shots on the road were so clear that even the smallest creatures can be captured. They have the camera which can rotate for a full 360 degrees and capture the whole situation. They showed us some scenarios, good and bad, for us to know what the capabilities of the cameras. They showed some road accidents that were horrible, their traffic enforcers caught doing dirty jobs and an enforcer who really made his job whether he’s going to sacrifice his life. Their cameras can also zoom in to specific areas. Some of their cameras has low quality because it runs on WiMax while the other has higher quality.
What I liked?
I like that the MMDA explained their services offered very well and I really liked today is that we have our pure pleasure time after the MMDA office visit. Our out of town trip this field trip. The road trip was long too and I enjoyed watching the sceneries. I also like the pitching activity in the bus while travelling because our facilitator really gave effort and allowed my other classmates to pitch in the bus while we are travelling.
I also liked the view in Tagaytay and I also liked their products in there such as the buko pie and some souvenir items. I also liked the enchanted kingdom ride all you can because it was really worth it because we have tried almost all the extreme rides. I also like that we repeated a ride 2x just to get even wet. I also like that I was able to sleep very well in the bus due to exhaustion .
What I didn’t like?
I didn’t liked that we got wet and we don’t have some extra pants to change and fortunately I brought a shirt and I changed pants earlier before going.
DAY 5
Today, I went on a seminar at the University of the Philippines – Diliman Department of Computer Science.
What I learned?
I learned that UP Diliman is too big and they use jeepney to go from one college to another. I also learned many things in this seminar held at UP especially at the department of computer science is that there were different fields of study according to the student’s expertise. Some students explained their field and showed us some of their projects. I have learned that in UP they don’t offer the course of Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) they only offer Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS). Also I learned that they have different special room of student that the student may choose
What I liked?
I liked that they showed us some of their laboratories, libraries, and classrooms though some of these facilities had classes on going that is why we were just on the outside and we just had a glimpse on the facilities inside the laboratories. I like their laboratories because they got good system units unlike the Jurassic computers in USEP.
What I didn’t like?
I didn’t like that we only visited one college and I also didn’t like it because I thought all along that we were going to experience their facilities because some classes were going on. The thing that I don’t like in the visit in the University of the Philippines is the tour in the different department of the schools because they don’t allow us to enter. I expect that I would see nearer the facilities they have. And I was disappointed on those things.
APPENDIX
What can I recommend for the improvement of the advance seminar program of USEP?
I recommend that they choose the companies to visit very wisely and I recommend in the improvement in the advance seminar program of USEP is, I want that they will hold meeting ahead of time so that the student can prepare ahead of time. They must choose the best companies that they will choose. So that students may learn many things in the trip. Also I hope that each student must come to the meetings. I also recommend that they must always submit the necessary documents as soon as possible.
My advice to those who will take their advance seminar program in the near future.
My advice is to tell their parents as early as possible to prepare for the amount because the amount paid was really huge but it was all worth it, worth every peso. On the road moments will always be the most amazing part since you will get to bond with your classmates and just have inside the bus or just fall asleep. Just prepare yourselves because even though this trip is very much enjoyable, it is also very exhausting. Visiting different companies does not only give you lessons in relation to your courses but also the life lessons shared by the speakers and even the tour guides. You just got to be careful on your valuables and even health. Don’t you dare try being sick while on this event because you’ll miss the fun and being tired at the same time. And also, just bring the things you’ll need for the entire trip, forget those unnecessary. And have fun; enjoy every momentum since not all can have this kind of events during their college days. Lastly I recommend that you must be friendly to your companions especially the higher years because you can get new friends in this field trip just like I did.
