MINOR PAPER
January 23, 2016

Seminar Overview

Last January 23, 2016, we had our minor field trip in the Social Hall. The event title was Graphic Design and Web Development. In which it is a great opportunity to learn about graphic design and web development, there were two topics introduced to us where the first speaker share his knowledge about graphic tools and the fundamentals of design. In the morning session, some speakers that are working on the industry for some time were invited to give us some inputs and inspire us to be better. I was excited for the event because I know that in the end of the seminar, I know I would be able to gain knowledge and get inspired with the speakers that were invited of the said event. The event was a success and I learned a lot in this activity.

First Speaker

The first speaker who delivered his topic was Ralph Gideon, he is one of the alumnae of the USEP (University of Southeastern Philippines). Before he proceed to his topic he introduced himself to everybody. According to him his first work was on Professional Regulation Commission as a programmer. He told us his experiences in life especially the kind of work his looking for in which he loves art. After he graduated, his first job was being a programmer in PRC or Professional Regulation Commission.  he share his knowledge and experiences with us about the Elements and Design Principles. In which he combined Arts and Information Technology to present to us. He said that the elements and principles of design are the building blocks which are the things that make up a design or build a design. And how we apply these principles of design to determine how successful the design is. There are 5 principles of design: Balance, Proportion, Rhythm, Emphasis, and, Unity. Balance is the concept of visual equilibrium, and relates to our physical sense of balance. The First principle is the Balance,  he said that Balance in design is a bit similar to  balance in physics. Mr. Ralph said that the elements should be visually connected in some way. Third Principle, is the Alignment, it is an element to create order and organization in a design, He said that aligning elements in order allows them to create a visual connection with each other.  We learned a lot from Mr. Ralph and hopefully we can apply what we learned from him to real world applications.

Second Speaker

The second speaker was Ms. Shannen Sapar. She studied BS Information Technology in the University of Immaculate Concepcion. She shared that being a front-end developer was a very big challenge to her at first, but she made it through by learning something new every single day. Ms. Shannen starts the discussion and she share her knowledge and experiences with us about being a front end web developer. But first what is a  front end web development, a front end web development is a mix of programming and layout that powers the visuals and interactions of the web. And these topics are the key in making a front-end project. She then talked about HTML Boilerplates, First I do not know what are boilerplate but later on I was be able to know what are boilerplates. Boilerplate is a unit of writing that can be reused over and over without change. Boilerplate helps you build fast, robust, and adaptable web apps or sites. For the CSS Preprocessors, A CSS preprocessor helps you write maintainable, future-proof code and it will seriously reduce the amount of CSS you have to write. Where these tools shine best are in large-scale user interfaces that require huge stylesheets and many style rules. We learned a lot about front end developing and we can really use what we learned in our future and current projects.

Third Speaker

The third speaker was Mr. Nikko Comidoy or simply Kuya Nikko. Kuya Nikko is also an alumnus from the university. He is well known for his application named "Doc Banana" in which he and his team won in a competition. I was so amazed and inspired with he’s speech. Unlike in the other speakers he doesn’t have any powerpoint presentation but the knowledge that I have acquired to me can be really helpful in my journey in the University. I really hope I would be successful like Mr.Nikko.
